What Is Primitive Style Imagine yourself stepping back into a much simpler time. Your family was always close by and Sunday’s were set aside for Church and visiting friends and family... Ruth and Jimmy Rochelle don't have to use their imaginations….this is their home, their business and their life…A primitive life……. On a daily basis we surround ourselves with a primitive lifestyle. Not out of necessity, but by choice. We have truly been blessed with a home that is a bounty of early primitive finds. Painted cupboards, rope beds (and yes, every bed in our home is a rope bed). The Rochelle’s take great pleasure in their collections and are always on the hunt for other primitives to add to their home or to sell in their shop, Primitive Homeplace Antiques........ We both suggest that you buy what you love. I truly love decorating with primitives. It has such a warmth that it touches you--heart and soul. I even light my candles in the house before I make coffee in the morning. There's no better compliment that anyone can pay you than to say how great your home smells. They never forget that…….There is nothing in our home that we donut use. Even the step-back cupboard in the kitchen, houses our cookware…….We have tried to cover all the modern appliances to give an earlier look……… It’s a love that can only be understood by another primitive lover…..Sometimes my customers ask me “How can I get the look that you have in your home when I live in a brick house?” I always tell them without even hesitating, you can have a primitive style home-no matter what you live in. One word of advice that I do always pass on - as it was passed on to me- It doesn't matter if you have all the early pieces of furniture--If you don't have the little things--You’re just not going to get that look. By little things; I mean..The Needful Stuff such as pantry boxes, old baskets, textiles (old or new), peg racks full of clothing. I don't think that it matters if your walls are wood or drywall , but I do think that color makes a big difference. I really like using primitive colors for the walls and trim. The tin lights also make a big change in a room. Never forget about the handmade items such as bears, calico dolls, calico covered books, and make doss. These really add texture to an earlier style. And the best part is that these don't even have to be old or early----There are so many talented artists making wonderful reproductions that have that “old and early look”. You can have a primitive looking house and not have an early piece in it. Just buy what you love. Some of our customers don't care is it was made yesterday as long as it has that look. One of the best things about primitives is that you can add them in with anything. But I will warn you-That it is addictive and the more you bring the earlier pieces into your home--the harder it is to part with them. Every time I buy a early piece that I really love---I always say that I am going to keep it forever and then I’ll find something that I like even better. That's why so many of our pieces in our home have names on the back of them. Ha! But one thing is for sure---My love for Primitives has never grown cold- The primitive style also spills out into your yard and gardens. If you have a yard that needs a little something--plant you an herb garden and add some primitive signs and bee skeps and your heart will warm to the site every time you drive in. We Opened our shop, Primitive Homeplace almost 7 years ago and I am still learning. The biggest joy is to find that right piece of furniture or horse on wheels that my customers are looking for. If you really love primitives --It is easy to sell them. I will say in all honesty that Our shop is only as good as the wonderful people that make things for us……We have great friends that are always here to help out. Whether it be a Sale , Show or Christmas Open House here at the shop-You can always expect to meet our family and friends here helping out….You meet so many people that before long ===they are an extended family as we consider them as such…… Questions Most Asked? “What do you like best about owning your own shop?” I never hesitate in saying “It's all the wonderful customers ==They depend on us to find that certain painted step-back cupboard or that rope bed complete with trundle bed-And when we're off on a buying trip -it's such a great feeling when you do find just what they are wanting. When I asked one of my best friends, Susie Vick, "What does Primitive Style" mean to you. Her reply was “It's the knowledge behind the piece and how it was used.” Haven't we all asked ourselves after we have bought that great old early sawbuck table, "Wonder who owned this and what was their family like, did they live in a log home?" I think that we just yearn for a Simpler Time when everything was such a slower pace. Life is Short. Enjoy It………….Whether you be a primitive lover or not---- Enjoy What God Has GivenYou……….. ------------------------------------------- Proprietors:Jimmy & Ruth Rochelle When we married 8 years ago he didn’t even know what a dry sink was.But he has learned a lot since then,in fact --he can buy for the shop as good as I can….It is a job that we love to do together. We are definitely growing in our shop.We have started setting up at Primitive Antique shows and have just recently started a web-site.The response to it has been overwhelming………Our wonderful daughter,Brittney has spent a lot of long hours helping on it and as she is a newly wed--We also thank her husband,David for his patience… One of our greatest accomplishments has been Our Harvest Gathering Show here in Sept. This will be our 3rd year on Sat.Sept.23rd,2006--9-3.
