The Front Porch Hello everybody and happy spring tyme!! I was THRILLED when Diana wrote to me and asked if I could write an article on 'the front porch' and how we can decorate and use it to reflect the simpler days of tymes past. There's no denying that I LOVE my porch; I have sooo many fond memories that have taken place there. If you stop and think about it, in early America, especially in the steamy summer months, after supper the family would, more than likely, gather on the porch (since the kitchen would have been too hot to sit in due to that good olde home cookin') and talk about their day and plans for the next one. It was also a wonderful place to sit and 'catch up' with friends and neighbors whilst sipping on a tall glass of ice-cold lemonade (how wonderful those days must have been ~ nobody was in a hurry. While decorating, I think of how a particular room was used in the olden days. Perhaps it (the porch) was used to do the days washin' so then I imagine it would be neat to use and olde wash tub with a scrub board propped inside of it sittin' underneath an olde wooden table adorning a candle (sittin atop an olde piece of homespun, of course) with an olde chair nearby just itchen' to be used! Can you tell that I like 'olde' things?! I always want my porch to be welcoming, saying to our guest "come on in an sit a spell!" Another thing I like to do is to decorate for the different seasons and holidays. It's so nice to come back home (especially for an unpleasant experience) and the first thing that yo see (after your yard, of course), is you warm and inviting porch. If you have any olde wooden doors, fence pieces or tall shutters try securing them on your porch in a corner or against a wall and hanging dried herbs or flower bunches from them, it's a neat backdrop. Crows (stuffed not real), olde painted flower pots, primitive birdhouses and antique garden tools make awesome accessories as well. I also like to take primitive pillows and cushions (reflecting the current season or holiday) and place them on my chairs and settee (It's not only pretty it makes that darn willow furniture more comfy)! Put your favorite magazine issues or books in a big ol' painted basket or atop a table for you and your company to enjoy. Hangin grapevine or honeysuckle vine around the ceiling with little lights tucked is is a lovely touch, also. Show some American pride by displaying olde glory either on a wall. hanging from a grapevine wreath or placed (many small ones) in a crock or bucket with some twigs. Finally, there is nothing sweeter than using a crock filled up with fresh cut daisies nestled on an olde table place between a comfortable olde pair of rocking chairs. I would love to be a rockin' right now! I could go on forever but then you wouldn't have time to go out and decorate your porch! Remember, the most important thing is to have fun decorating, and if you're having a hard time with it, just use the things you cherish most ~ that way you can't go wrong! Decoratin' blessin's to you and yours! Candy -------------------------------------------
